Being a Tourist in Sydney: The Rocks

One of the things you just have to make time for on a visit to Sydney is a visit to The Rocks and the Rocks Market which is partly under the Harbour Bridge.  Mo and I spent a morning there before Fiona eventually caught up with us and took us off to our afternoon adventure.

By the time we were ready for coffee it was packed - and there was a huge garden at the back.
Lots of the old properties have been renovated and turned into shops of all sorts.
How's that for a body?
There were many stalls selling arts and crafts of every description and a lot of food stalls too
The Rocks Market is to the left of this picture under the bridge.  This part of the port area is The Rocks.
On top of the Harbour Bridge (One to jog Kate's memory)
Sydney's oldest pub

    1. Well, Bill, I certainly think it's a great place to visit (Sydney in general and The Rocks in particular) but I wouldn't like to live there (or in any city!).

  2. I love houses with verandahs and usually like the look of old ones better than new ones.
By the way I have been intending to mention the book you sent me in my blog. I am sorry I have not yet done so. I meant to add it in with the latest post about murals, as it is also relevant to the Whistler Room post. Then I forgot! And now it's too late. I am getting a lot of pleasure from the book, though, and will get around to mentioning it soon.

    1. One of the things that struck me most about Sydney, Jenny, was the huge variety of housing all placed seemingly randomly and, of course, verandahs are almost an essential for the lifestyle as well as looking beautiful. To me that is so much more preferable than the insistence on uniformity and compatibility so beloved of town planners in Britain. For a second I though 'Book? Blog mention?'. Even then it took me a while to remember the details. Oh dear. Age cometh not alone.

  3. When I see arts & crafts markets or exhibitions, I am always in two minds about them. There are amazing examples of creativity, many beautiful things, but I often wonder who buys all that, and then clutter their homes with yet another piece of deco.
The Rocks market looks a great place for a leisurely stroll. I suppose the tent structure is there permanently, or is it just a temporary market?

    1. Meike the tent structure looked pretty well established to me but I imagine that it can be dismantled reasonably easily if need be. Few of us live in houses uncluttered to some degree or other with 'stuff' and 'things'. I'm not a lover of too much clutter but then what is my acceptable level would be way too much for yours. Just as I know of people with keepsakes and so on all over the place each one either holding a memory or a visual pleasure for them. What you say holds good though to the extent than many of the things produced and sold do not satisfy needs they simply create and satisfy wants.

    1. It is Monica and , just as importantly to my leisurely mind, one can sit and enjoy a coffee and watch the world go by.

  8. Looks like an intriguing place to explore and pick up a bargain or two.
Loved the body...the dogs of course.
Here we are utilizing old buildings too and turning them into shops and offices...I must write a post soon to highlight some of them.

    1. Virginia it was a wonderful place to explore and there were lots of beautiful things but I'm not sure there were that many bargains. Of course I meant the dog's. I look forward to your posts on the buildings of your Island.
